Here's some tips when contacting a cake designer:

  • Do it over the phone first. Don't waste time going from store to store, you don't have time to waste, you're planning a wedding! Ask them if they have or can design the kind of cake what you want. Do they have those kind of skills and experience? Come right out and ask!
  • Do they have a portfolio, any examples of unusual wedding cake designs (photos at least, if not mock-up, dummy cakes)?
  • Do they have any experience in designing the size and kind of cake we want for our wedding? If they don't have the exact design you desire, they should be open to discuss it and perhaps at least sketch out a design when you meet.
  • Can you give us an estimate of cost based on our design and decorating needs and size of cake to feed x number of people? They should be able to give you at least a ballpark figure. Do not accept, "Well that all depends...blah, blah, blah". Just have them give you a dollar amount. Otherwise, if it's no where near your budget, you can know upfront and move on.
  • Don't forget about taste. If you have a particular flavor in mind for your cake, ask if they can have an example for you to taste. Another good reason for calling ahead and scheduling a look and taste meeting.
