Unique and unusual celebrity wedding cakes are a great place to get ideas for your own. Because celebrities can spare no expense, they can go as unusual as they wish. Don't think you have to have chocolate or vanilla to please everyone. Please yourself first and choose a flavor, no matter how exotic, that you like best. It's your cake after all!

More recently, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz's celebrity wedding cake matched their Alice in Wonderland theme. A multi-tiered caked, designed by Sam Godfrey of Perfect Endings, with a top hat base followed by tea kettle, flower pot and stop watch layers. Have a favorite movie? Book? Use their cake as inspiration.

Themed weddings are always fun and the cake is usually one of the highlights of the reception . A theme could be anything you like. From sports to Hollywood, a time period, favorite movie. Be creative. When you find photos of celebrity wedding cakes you like, print them and bring them along to bakeries or send them online to cake designers.

Here's some tips when contacting a cake designer:

Do it over the phone first. Don't waste time going from store to store, you don't have time to waste, you're planning a wedding! Ask them if they have or can design the kind of cake what you want. Do they have those kind of skills and experience? Come right out and ask!

Do they have a portfolio, any examples of unusual wedding cake designs (photos at least, if not mock-up, dummy cakes)?

Do they have any experience in designing the size and kind of cake we want for our wedding? If they don't have the exact design you desire, they should be open to discuss it and perhaps at least sketch out a design when you meet.

Can you give us an estimate of cost based on our design and decorating needs and size of cake to feed x number of people? They should be able to give you at least a ballpark figure. Do not accept, "Well that all depends...blah, blah, blah". Just have them give you a dollar amount. Otherwise, if it's no where near your budget, you can know upfront and move on.

Don't forget about taste. If you have a particular flavor in mind for your cake, ask if they can have an example for you to taste. Another good reason for calling ahead and scheduling a look and taste meeting.
