Your wedding cake should be about you and your soon-to-be-spouse and what the both of you love. Here is a place online, Wedding Cuts, that offers several choices for building your Custom Monogram Wedding Cake Topper. First you choose your three letters. Then you choose from a couple dozen fonts.  They note if you choose to not have any decoration added to your letters, the script-style fonts look very elegant and stylish without any extra adornment. But if you do want to go one step further, try out a custom topper.  You will have to order in advance and depending upon how busy the vendor is which may mean months in advance of your wedding.  Custom wedding cake toppers are typically going to cost you more as well.

Here is one place with an odd name, Thumb Print Kids, that does custom toppers and looks like they do a pretty good job replicating the look of the bride an groom from photos. Go here, Custom Wedding Cake Topper for examples - be sure to click on the photos to see the details.  The downside - this place needs your order at least 3 months in advance and says most customers will book up to a year in advance. Oh, and one more thing, a bride and groom order costs $2,9000.  Now this is contradictory to what I said about not having to break the bank.  Personally, I think that's a crazy amount of money for what you are getting, but if you have the cash - go for it!

We just watched an episode where a couple were having a beach wedding and wanted a wedding cake that looked like a sandcastle. It was unbelievable how realistic it looked. The sand was carefully crafted out of graham cracker crumbs. They even took the time to shade the sand (graham crumbs) so in some places in actually looked wet, while other spots looked dry.  Duff's people had pictures of the bride and groom while creating the cake, and made little models of them playing on the sandcastle together. How cute is that. And of course, the happy couple loved it when they showed Charm City delivering the cake.

The other thing is needing to reserve your cake way in advance. If you look at their FAQs page, they already have some weeks booked for December, 2010.  So unfortunately, last minute wedding plans will not work. Cupcakes aren't just for kids anymore! Martha Stewart has showcased cupcake wedding cakes on her site and the most poshest decorators and bridal magazines have followed suit. A cupcake wedding cake can be just as impressive or even more so than any other type of cake. You can make them to be as elaborate and formal or crazy and fun as you want. You can easily match your wedding theme to your cupcakes.  You can decorate them very intricately or easy and simple and add little cupcake toppers or "cuddlers". If you wanted to, you could use a regular tier-cake stand to build your cupcake cake, but there are actually special tier stands and towers designed for such.  You can get them as small or big as you want. The brand, "Cupcaketree" has sizes that will hold up to 300 cupcakes. Their mini size holds 100 cupcakes, but both sizes have 5 tiers. Easy to assemble and easy to decorate. The large size is $40, the smaller one, $27. What a bargain!

How could we not mention Donald Trump and Melania's celebrity wedding cake?! Okay, it wasn't as tall as The Eiffel Tower cake, but at five feet, seven tiers, weighing in at an astonishing fifty pounds, this one takes the cake (pun intended).

Like Trump's penthouse adorned with a multitude of intricate designs, so were the 3,000 sugar-spun roses given much attention to detail by pastry chef, Cedric Barbaret of TrumpsMar-a-Lago Club of Palm Beach Florida. Don't think you have to have chocolate or vanilla to please everyone. Please yourself first and choose a flavor, no matter how exotic, that you like best. It's your cake after all!

More recently, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz's celebrity wedding cake matched their Alice in Wonderland theme. A multi-tiered caked, designed by Sam Godfrey of Perfect Endings, with a top hat base followed by tea kettle, flower pot and stop watch layers. Have a favorite movie? Book? Use their cake as inspiration.

Themed weddings are always fun and the cake is usually one of the highlights of the reception . A theme could be anything you like. From sports to Hollywood, a time period, favorite movie. Be creative. When you find photos of celebrity wedding cakes you like, print them and bring them along to bakeries or send them online to cake designers.

If you are having a huge wedding with a lot of guests, you can save a little money by making a smaller designer cake, as the centerpiece, and supplement cake servings with a simpler cake on the side to feed guests. Here are some great resources for getting a western wedding cake. For a start go to yellowpages.com, enter "wedding cakes" in the Find field and then enter your city or zip code. It will return the Wedding Cakes & Pastries category with a list of businesses in your area. Call them up, ask them if they have any photo examples of western wedding cakes they have done or if not, are they willing to design one for you. Ask them about estimated price based on the size of the cake
and how intricate the design is going to be. Don't waste time going down there if their price is too high or if they are not skilled enough to do special designs. Come right out and ask. Listen hear, partner, I have a wedding to plan and I don't have time to waste!  A shoot-out will not be necessary.

• Do it over the phone first. Don't waste time going from store to store, you don't have time to waste, you're planning a wedding! Ask them if they have or can design the kind of cake what you want. Do they have those kind of skills and experience? Come right out and ask!

• Do they have a portfolio, any examples of unusual wedding cake designs (photos at least, if not mock-up, dummy cakes)?

• Do they have any experience in designing the size and kind of cake we want for our wedding? If they don't have the exact design you desire, they should be open to discuss it and perhaps at least sketch out a design when you meet.

• Can you give us an estimate of cost based on our design and decorating needs and size of cake to feed x number of people? They should be able to give you at least a ballpark figure. Do not accept, "Well that all depends...blah, blah, blah". Just have them give you a dollar amount. Otherwise, if it's no where near your budget, you can know upfront and move on.

• Don't forget about taste. If you have a particular flavor in mind for your cake, ask if they can have an example for you to taste. Another good reason for calling ahead and scheduling a look and taste meeting.
