Ace of Cakes Unusual Wedding Cakes

How could we possibly do a site about unusual wedding cakes without mentioning Ace of Cakes? Well we can't. We love Ace of Cakes, the Food Network television show that shows a day in the life of Charm City Cakes Bakery in Baltimore, Maryland.  Not only are their cakes awesome, but so are the people who work there. Chef Duff Goldman is the baker/owner and he along with Mary Alice (office manager extraordinaire) and his team of artistic friends make the most unique cakes, including unusual wedding cakes.

Bobcat Wedding Cake

Charm City Bobcat Wedding Cake

For example, this wedding cake pictured above. It's called "Bobcat" in their gallery of photos. I don't know what the premise is, but if they can make a wedding cake centered around a theme of a bobcat plowing over a wedding cake, then they can create any theme you can possibly imagine for your unusual wedding cake.

Ace of Cakes Beach Wedding Cake

We just watched an episode where a couple were having a beach wedding and wanted a wedding cake that looked like a sandcastle. It was unbelievable how realistic it looked. The sand was carefully crafted out of graham cracker crumbs. They even took the time to shade the sand (graham crumbs) so in some places in actually looked wet, while other spots looked dry.  Duff's people had pictures of the bride and groom while creating the cake, and made little models of them playing on the sandcastle together. How cute is that. And of course, the happy couple loved it when they showed Charm City delivering the cake.

Charm City Cakes Cost and Scheduling

But now here's the hard part. If you order a cake from Charm City Cakes, it's gonna cost you. Minimum order is $1,000!  But hey, if you want the best, you're gonna have to pay for it. The other thing is needing to reserve your cake way in advance. If you look at their FAQs page, they already have some weeks booked for December, 2010.  So unfortunately, last minute wedding plans will not work. Be sure to set your DVR to catch all the episodes of Ace of Cakes on the Food Network, new and old.

That’s my wedding cake! The premise behind the “bobcat” wedding cake was a comment I said to my wife just before we were engaged. I said “If you marry me, you marry the college” since I do snow removal crew at my work and can be gone for days at a time plowing snow. The cake looking part was fondant and the snowplow was the cake, including the seat cushion and the bed. Note the groom is in shorts, something I wear year round, even in snow. The cake was made before Duff got his show and he personally sketched it out for us. He was totally awesome to work with and people still talk about the cake (and the wedding) 4 years later.

Thanks for sharing – I was wondering about the whole story behind this one, as noted in my description. It’s such an awesome, original cake. Charm City Cakes never fails to amaze me. I guess you’ll be gearing up for snow season soon and apparently your wife doesn’t mind that you’ll be gone for days. Congrats on your 4 years together!
